Lockwood Primary School

Aspire Awards

At Lockwood Primary Schoolall our children from Reception to Year 6 take part in our Aspire Awards scheme. Every child earns Aspire points for their behaviour, attitude and effort at school and for demonstrating our values of happiness and learning.  Any adult in school from teachers to office staff, lunchtime supervisors to the site manger can award Aspire Points.  For every 25 points children recieve, they are awarded an Aspire Award certificate in assembly.

Each Aspire Award is based on a person who has shown the qualities we want to develop in our children. From the passion of naturalist Steve Backshall to the skill of local Lioness Beth Mead, to the creativity of storytellers, Joseph Coelho and Tola Okogwu, these are people we want our children to aspire to.

The inspirational people we use on our Aspire Awards are chosen in many different ways. Some are chosen by staff, some by the School or Eco Council, some are voted for by the children in assemblies and some are put forward by children themselves as people with qualities they admire.

You can see the subject of each of our Aspire Awards below:

25 Aspire Point Award - Stan Hollis

Soldier Stan Hollis worked and lived less than 10 minutes drive from our school.  He was the only person to be awarded a Victoria Cross for bravery on D-Day when the allied forces started their liberation of Nazi occupied Europe.

50 Aspire Point Award - Beth Mead

Beth Mead was born near Whitby and went to Teesside University.  She is an England internation footballer and was top-scorer and play of the tournament as the Lionessess won the women's European Championship tournament in 2022.  Beth Mead was the School Council's choice for the second Aspire Award.

75 Aspire Point Award - Steve Backshall

Steve Backshall is a naturalist, an environmental campaigner and a popular TV presenter.  His passion for animals and for wildlife conservation made him a superb choice when the school's Eco Council had the opportunity to choose an inspirational figure for this award.

125 Aspire Point Award - The Storytellers

During National Storytelling Week 2025, our pupils enjoyed some inspirational live lessons from authors Tola Okogwu and Joseph Coelho.  From diverse and working class backgrounds, both have become celebrated and respected authors.

150 Aspire Point Award - The Land Girls

This award celebrates the work of the Women's Land Army during World War II.  It was chosen as part of our 80th anniversary celebrations of VE day.  The Land Girls are one of best known examples of how women worked tirelessly to support this country's war effort while the young men fought in the Army, Navy and Airforce.

King's Awards

To mark the achievement of collecting 100 Aspire Points, children receive the  first of the special Awards - the Bronze King's Award.  Children who receive a King's Award are presented with a special certificate in assembly together with a badge to wear as part of their uniform.  Children can collect further King's Awards for earning 200 and 350 Aspire Points.

The Bronze King's Award - 100 Aspire Points
The Silver King's Award - 200 Aspire Points
The Gold King's Award - 350 Aspire Points
