Lockwood Primary School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Welcome to our PSHE and RSE page

At Lockwood our PSHE curriculum together with our Relationship Education (RSE) give each and every child the knowledge and skills to lead healthy, independent and responsible lives and to make positive contributions to society. We help children to understand how they are developing personally and socially and to undertake moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We see our children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. Children learn to respect themselves and each other, value diversity and celebrate differences. They learn skills to maintain healthy friendships and relationships. Children learn how to keep themselves safe and healthy, physically and mentally. They learn how to manage their feelings and emotions and develop a good sense of wellbeing.  PSHE and RSE contribute hugely to our school ethos of 'learning to be happy'.

How we teach PSHE and RSE

At Lockwood we use as a basis, the KAPOW scheme of work which incorporates the RSE statutory guidance and The PSHE Association Programme of Study. From this high quality curriculum, we constantly review and develop our teaching and learning so that it best meets the needs of our pupils, our families and our community.  The organisation of our RSE and PSHE curriculum is organised into the following themes:

  • Families and Relationships
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Safety and the Changing Body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic Wellbeing
  • Identity (Year 6 only)
Parents and Carers

At Lockwood Primary School, we believe children should understand the facts about puberty and human reproduction before they leave primary school so they are prepared for transition to secondary school.

All parents and carers have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory Relationships Education.  The school will advise parents prior to the delivery of these units and remind them of their right to withdraw their child.  The Department for Education has produced a guide for parents which you can access here.

We would welcome any parent or carer who wants to view any of the lesson plans or resources for the sex education aspects of our Relationships curriculum before making a decision about their own child.

Early Years PSHE

Personal, social and emotional development is one of the three Prime Areas in the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage. The are three early learning goals (ELG) that the PSHE curriculum helps our youngest children to achieve:

Self Regulation
  • Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others, and begin to regulate their behaviour accordingly
  • Set and work towards simple goals, being able to wait for what they want and control their immediate impulses when appropriate
  • Give focused attention to what the teacher says, responding appropriately
Managing Self
  • Be confident to try new activities and show independence, resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge
  • Explain the reasons for rules, know right from wrong and try to behave accordingly
  • Manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs, including dressing, going to the toilet and understanding the importance of healthy food
Building Relationships
  • Work and play cooperatively and take turns with others
  • Form positive attachments to adults and friendships with peers
  • Show sensitivity to their own and to others’ needs
