Welcome to our Reading Curriculum page
Reading is the very heart of our curriculum and an important part of our daily experiences at Lockwood. Our primary focus through our book-based curriculum is to motivate children through high-quality, diverse children’s literature by significant authors. We do this through providing our children with a breadth of opportunities to immerse themselves in a range of literary worlds and themes, heightening engagement and creating curiosity through ‘Book Hooks’, drama, discussion and debate. This allows our children to see themselves represented and also explore the lives and experiences of others. Our school Reading offer outlines the rich reading experiences and opportunities provided for our children to ensure that every child achieves, thrives and is inspired.
How We Teach Whole Class Reading
Every day the children from Year 2 to Year 6 enjoy whole class reading sessions (WCR) which are 40 minute Reading-focussed lessons across a breadth of carefully selected fiction, non-fiction, poetry, playscripts and picture books as set out in our Reading Spine and Reading Curriculum Overview. Each session has a clear focus on mastering skills and understanding in Reading VIPERS through a careful sequence of learning such as:
- Developing Vocabulary in Context
- Quick Retrieval
- Individual Reflection
- Partner Talk
- Application of VIPERS Reading domains through quality focussed Solo Tasks
Whole class Reading lessons provide children with the opportunity to further develop their understanding of the Class Novel/text, connecting on a deeper level. This is further supported through Reading lessons with a focus on Linked Texts, related to the themes, genres and context of the class Novel/text, across a range of curriculum subjects.
Further information about the Reading VIPER skills can be found below, including question ideas for use with your child when reading together at home.
