Music

Welcome to our Music page

Imagine a life without music! Listening to, appreciating, singing along to and making music is an important part of a child’s experience at school. When adults remember back to their days at school, the songs they sang, the shows they performed in and the instruments they played together will be at the forefront of their memories. Music is a language that connects people all over the world.

At Lockwood our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity, self-expression and foster a lifelong love of music.  It is our intent to ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop their musical potential through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, composing and improvising across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Lessons enable children to develop their skills, appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and begin to make judgements about the quality of music. Through assemblies, musical experiences, concerts and key stage performances children are able to express their emotions and showcase their understanding of how to perform with awareness of others. We ensure that children understand the value and importance of music not just within school but in the wider community, and that they are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of contexts

How we teach Music

The Charanga Musical School Scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. It is ideal for specialist and non-specialist teachers and provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum.

From Reception to Year 6, the learning consists of six half-termly Units of Work. These units include listening and appraising music, singing, playing instruments, improvisation, composition and performance. The children play a range of tuned instruments (glockenspiels, xylophones, recorders etc.) and un-tuned percussive instruments. The scheme involves a lot of games where the children first learn then practice musical skills such as finding the tempo, copying rhythms, learning musical notation and singing.

Charanga has a vast array of music from all over the world. Working through the scheme, our children classical, jazz, funk, choral, rock, hip-hop and many other musical styles. They also encounter music from all across the globe including Latin America, Africa, India and Europe. We also have many enhancements to this scheme through the support of the Tees Valley Music Service, Rocksteady Music and a specilaist teacher who teaches all Year 5 children to play the recorder and all Year 6 children to play the clarinet.

Early Years Music

Music is important in the Early Years Foundation Stage as it helps children's development in several areas. Singing songs and rhymes together is a great way to develop their communication and language skills in a fun and engaging way. Singing and dancing also helps children express their feelings and ideas, and share them with others.  This reinforces positive relationships with adults and other children.

Music activities are great for helping build children's confidence, encouraging them to interact with each other, and helping them learn to participate in group activities. Music is also excellent for their physical development. They learn to move in a range of new ways as they dance in time with the music, or play musical instruments to a tune.

Our EFYS classrooms resonate with the sound of singing, chanting and noise-making every day.

The National Plan for Music Education

In 2021, the Government produced a National Plan for Music Education. This document contained a new vision to enable all children and young people to:

  • learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together
  • have the opportunity to progress their musical interests and talents, including professionally

There is a useful webpage that explains the aims and intentions of the National Plan for Music Education and how it will affect children and young people both in and out of school. You can visit this page here.

All schools should are required to publish a a music development plan, as set out in the National Plan for Music Education which aims to promote the school music offer to parents and prospective parents and give greater opportunity for schools and music hubs to work together.
